Meeting Highlights from 15th International Thyroid Congress, 85th Annual Meeting of the American Thyroid Association

The 15th International Thyroid Congress (ITC) was hosted by the American Thyroid Association (ATA). The scientific program was led by distinguished faculty from 33 countries and the United States. Endocrinologists, thyroidologists, oncologists, surgeons, and other health professionals renowned for their expertise in thyroid function and biology, and diagnosis and management of thyroid disease were among the attendees.

In addition to the American Thyroid Association, sister societies who participated and supported Congressional events were:

  • Asia and Oceania Thyroid Association (AOTA)
  • European Thyroid Association (ETA)
  • Latin American Thyroid Association (LATS)

Van Meter Award Lectureship
The Van Meter Award is presented each year to an outstanding young investigator in recognition of contributions to thyroid gland or related research. The 2015 recipient was Japanese animal biologist Takashi Yoshimura, PhD. Dr. Yoshimura is a Professor at the Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules at Nagoya University.  

John B. Stanbury Thyroid Pathophysiology Medal
This prestigious medal is awarded for surpassing contributions to either thyroid physiology or the pathophysiology of thyroidal disease. This year’s recipient was Sheue-yann Cheng, PhD. Dr. Cheng is a Senior Investigator in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. She is among the first to explore the mechanism of thyroid hormone binding to serum and membrane proteins. Since 1980, Dr. Cheng has been an active member of ATA serving on many committees.

Distinguished Service Award
The recipient of the 2015 Distinguished Service Award is Peter A. Kopp, MD. Dr. Kopp is an Associate Professor, Department of Medicine-Endocrinology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. In his practice, he specializes in treating thyroid dysfunction and thyroid cancer. Areas of recent research include targeted therapies in advanced thyroid cancer and thyrotropin receptor mutation. Since 2013, Dr. Kopp has been the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Thyroid.
