Educate patients with diabetes that after food is eaten and during digestion the meal, snack, and/or beverage is broken down into glucose, which is a form of sugar. Glucose is necessary for energy. Insulin is the key that allows glucose to enter the body’s cells. If there isn’t enough insulin, glucose can’t enter cells and causes hyperglycemia.
