Groups raise diabetes awareness through social media sites

Despite the fact that millions of Americans suffer from either type 1 or type 2 diabetes, there is relatively little known about the disease. In order to raise awareness of the conditions and lifestyle factors that may impact them, groups are taking to popular media outlets to help spread their messages.

For example, a group of Temple University students recently created a YouTube channel called Diabetes Diaries, which is devoted to helping people with the conditions. The students said that they see the channel as a place where people affected by the disease can go to talk about how it is impacting their lives and hear what other people are doing about it.

"Our hope is that Diabetes Diaries will provide a kind of release for [people with diabetes], that they can come out with their true thoughts and feelings about the disease via the video," said Emily Hooven, one of the project's creators. Hooven has type 1 diabetes.

More than 23 million U.S. citizens have either type 1 or type 2 diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. Furthermore, nearly one quarter of these individuals are undiagnosed.
