Radiation exposure may increase risk of thyroid disorders

One potential cause of thyroid disorders is exposure to radiation. People who have been exposed to production of nuclear weapons or above-ground detonation of an atomic bomb may have a higher risk for developing thyroid cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Moreover, children who have been exposed to nuclear substances may be more vulnerable to these conditions than adults.

Radiation causes health problems when cells are killed quickly enough to disrupt tissue function, or when damaged cells are incompletely repaired. The thyroid gland has low regeneration ability, the CDC reports.

An example of people experiencing radiation occurred when the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded in 1986. Citizens of western Russia and much of northern Europe were exposed to toxic nuclear radiation. According to a Chernobyl Foundation report, contaminated areas of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine had more than 40,000 cases of thyroid cancer between 1992 and 2002.

Unfortunately, wildfires in Russia have recently spread to the former site of the Chernobyl plant, and radioactive particles are airborn again, OverTheLimit.info reported. Officials are concerned that the dust may spread and contaminate surrounding areas.
