Synthroid & Armour don't work - now what?

From: sobrien90 - 2 years 17 weeks ago

In 2008, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's at the age of 18. I had been taking Synthroid for four years and never noticed a real issue until 2012. I had a death in the family and my thyroid levels started to climb (I believe my TSH was around a 4 at the time). After 12 hours of sleep, I was still exhausted. After upping my dosage of Synthroid, things seemed to level out after a few months. Soon after I joined Weight Watchers, started working out 4-5 times a week, dropped 15 pounds, and my levels haven't been regulated since.

I experienced severe anxiety from taking Synthroid, but my TSH levels always came back normal which meant I always received a similar response from my Endo: "is there anything other than your thyroid that might be causing anxiety?". Does anyone ever answer no to that? Of course life is stressful! She reluctantly adjusted my dose.

In late 2015, I started seeing a Naturopath and finally felt normal. The anxiety was gone, but after 5 months it started creeping back in. I was done. I stopped taking Synthroid and within a week, I noticed a difference. The anxiety was gone, I was able to take a deep breath without feeling like I couldn't fully get to the top of it (I'm sure this makes sense to anyone else who's experienced heart palpitations from meds), and I stopped losing as much hair every time I showered (I'm talking 5 strands vs 15. It was noticeable). Only issue: I was absolutely exhausted. In 6 weeks, my TSH levels had risen from a normal range to a 7, however, my free T3 and T4 levels were normal.

I started taking Armour around May 2016 as a compromise and for the first time in as long as I could remember, I had energy. Although I woke up alert and focused, I could not fall asleep and felt like my heart was beating out of control despite having a normal pulse. I was also experiencing crazy hair loss and started to get headaches and body aches that would last all day. I cut my supplement in half which seemed to help with the anxiety and insomnia but having a 24/7 headache wasn't cutting it for me.

I switched back to Synthroid in July 2016 and here I am yet again experiencing anxiety and hair loss. I don't know what to do. I'm very sensitive to medication and would prefer not to be on anything if that's an option. I love my Naturopath and will continue to use herbal supplements, but I'm open to more. Does anyone have suggestions? What's worked for you? Essential oils? Paleo diet (gluten does not seem to like me either)? Ayurveda? Any doctor referrals?
