Actress Portia de Rossi diagnosed with osteoporosis
In recent weeks, Portia de Rossi - actress and wife of television personality Ellen DeGeneres - published a book titled Unbearable Lightness
. The book chronicles the star's struggles with her sexuality as well as an eating disorder, which ultimately resulted in a diagnosis of osteoporosis, Third Age
The 37-year-old actress reveals that her conscience would wake her up at 4 a.m. every day, push her to get up and run on the treadmill or do hundreds of crunches and lunges, according to Daily News and Analysis.
De Rossi writes in her book about how she used to have nightmares of eating an entire pizza or a plate of fries, and wake up crying. According to the Herald Sun
, it took a diagnosis of several illnesses to shock her into admitting the disease. She was diagnosed with osteoporosis and the auto-immune disease lupus, and was even showing signs of cirrhosis of the liver. The actress said that she had not had a period for a year, and her organ function was dying.
Approximately eight million women and two million men have osteoporosis in the U.S., according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
