America's obsession with dieting is affecting the health of the female population. According to a new study by the Daily Telegraph, almost a third of women cut out entire food groups in an attempt to lose weight, which could result in malnutrition. Women who stop eating dairy may be missing crucial nutrients such as calcium and vitamin D, which promote good bone health.
For example, Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow recently announced that she was diagnosed with osteopenia, a thinning of the bones that can be a precursor to osteoporosis, Metro East Pain reports. The Hollywood star has been on a macrobiotic diet for over 11 years, which restricts her from eating most animal products.
"I suffered a pretty severe tibial plateau fracture a few years ago (requiring surgery) which led the orthopedic surgeon to give me a bone scan, at which point it was discovered I had the beginning stages of osteopenia," she wrote on her blog, Goop.
In a poll of 4,500 British women, results showed that 30 percent of participants admitted to avoiding entire food groups when trying to lose weight, with about 28 percent giving up cheese and 11 percent cutting out dairy completely. Over 40 percent of women admitted to not eating bread, and more than a quarter of participants said that they only take fat and calorie content into consideration when choosing a meal.
The Centers for Disease Control report that low bone density is most common among Caucasian women, with 17 percent developing osteoporosis and 42 percent developing osteopenia.
