An Overview of the Parathyroid

Parathyroid Essentials

Hyperparathyroidism

The primary disease of parathyroid glands is overactivity—too much parathyroid hormone is produced. This is called hyperparathyroidism. Under this condition of hyperparathyroidism, one or more of the parathyroid glands behaves inappropriately by making excess hormone regardless of the level of calcium. In other words, the parathyroid glands continue to make large amounts of parathyroid hormone even when the calcium level is normal and they should not be making hormone at all.

Scientific Publications Regarding Radioguided Minimally Invasive Parathyroidectomy

Physicians demand that new techniques/drugs/devices undergo scientific testing to prove their value. This keeps "junk" science from becoming common place and assures that patients are taken care of in the best possible manner. Once this testing has been completed,

Hypoparathyroidism

Hypoparathyroidism is the combination of symptoms due to inadequate parathyroid hormone production.  This is a very rare condition, and most commonly occurs because of damage to or removal of parathyroid glands at the time of parathyroid or thyroid surgery.

Minimal Parathyroid Surgery

Also called: Minimally Invasive Radioguided Parathyroidectomy, or "MIRP" The technique of minimally invasive parathyroidectomy using intraoperative nuclear mapping (also called minimally invasive radioguided parathyroidectomy (MIRP)) was pioneered in

Sestamibi Scanning

Sestamibi scanning is the preferred way in which to localize diseased parathyroid glands prior to an operation. This parathyroid scan was invented in the early 1990's and now is widely available at essentially every hospital in the United States (however, as yo

Hyperparathyroidism Diagnosis and Treatment

Since parathyroids are glands of the endocrine system, we can detect disease in these glands by measuring the appropriateness of their hormone production.

Parathyroid Surgery: The Standard Technique

Since 1925, the gold standard treatment for primary hyperparathyroidism has been to surgically remove the parathyroid gland (or glands) which are overproducing hormone. Remember, this is a hormone problem, so the goal is to remove the source of the excess

Preoperative Localization of Parathyroid Tumors

If you have parathyroid disease, chances are that just one of your parathyroid glands has gone bad. Parathyroid disease will be cured if the surgeon takes out that one bad gland!  But, there are four parathyroids and they can be located all over the n
