AACE 25th Annual Scientific & Clinical Congress:

AACE/ACE Launches Type 2 Diabetes Management Algorithm App

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and American College of Endocrinology (ACE) launched an innovative app for physicians during the AACE's 25th Annual Scientific Clinical Congress in Orlando, FL. Jeffrey R. Garber, MD, FACP, FACE announced availability of the AACE/ACE Comprehensive Type 2 Diabetes Algorithm App and demonstrated how the app may be utilized in a clinical setting. Dr. Garber is a member of the AACE/ACE Task Force that authored the algorithm that the app is based on.

Dr. Garber is the Chief of Endocrinology at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates and a member of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Brigham and Women's Hospitals endocrine divisions in Boston, MA. He also is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

App Development
"We have a technology committee and capable in-house graphics department who were actually instrumental in the development of the app. Astra Zeneca helped to support this, but in no way had anything to do with the design, layout, or functionality," stated Dr. Garber.

Development of the app involved an electronic interactive algorithm, which is a sophisticated approach to transforming written diabetes guidelines into an interface with computer software and execution engines.

Comprehensive Guide
The app provides physicians an easy-to-use functional tool to help make evidence-based decisions about individual patient care. Dr. Garber said the app is a "simple concept" that is not incorporated with an electronic medical record, is not patient specific, and there is no memory.

This robust app provides users with detailed narratives and links to additional information, including the entire AACE/ACE Comprehensive Type 2 Diabetes Management Executive Summary (2016) with references. Physicians can quickly access information, including lifestyle therapies, complications-concentric care for patients with obesity, prediabetes, goals for glycemic control, glycemic control algorithm, adding/intensifying insulin, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk factor modifications, profiles of antidiabetic medication, and principles.
