Hypertension is a risk factor for both microvascular and macrovascular complications in patients with diabetes mellitus.  There are few studies investigating the goal blood pressure levels in patients with type 1 diabetes.  The guidelines generally extrapolate the data from studies of type 2 diabetics to patients with type 1 diabetes.

The following articles address important components of blood pressure control in type 1 diabetics.  Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in patients with type 1 diabetes, underscoring the importance of treating hypertension appropriately in this population.
