Type 2 diabetes patients may benefit from cholesterol testing

According to health officials, patients with type 2 diabetes would greatly benefit from receiving a cholesterol test.

By having levels of cholesterol monitored, these individuals can significantly reduce their risk for developing serious complications such as cardiovascular disease. Lipid tests - such as the VAP Cholesterol Test - are generally affordable, widely available and can provide useful information regarding the treatment and management of type 2 diabetes.

"We know that aggressive management of multiple cardiovascular disease risks in diabetes mellitus patients has proven beneficial," said Michael E. Cobble, chief medical officer of the Atherotech Diagnostics Lab. "But in order to properly treat these patients, we first must identify them and effectively assess their risk. This is achieved through advanced lipid profiles."

These tests can provide an accurate measurement of levels of LDL, HDL and other lipid components in patients with diabetes. It includes information that is considered necessary by the guidelines of the American Diabetes Association and the American College of Cardiology.

The VAP is capable of directly measuring LDL and is unaffected by triglycerides. These qualifications allow it to be safely and effectively used on non-fasting diabetic individuals.
