Yoga may help those with thyroid conditions

According to statistics by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), approximately 27 million Americans have been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder.

Yoga professionals suggest engaging in the practice in order to bring blood flow to the thyroid gland and the heart, as well as aid in boosting oxygen in the blood and helping circulation, AZ Family reports.

Experts in the field believe that several postures can have the effect of energizing and rejuvenating the thyroid to balance out hormones and help to regulate metabolism. The gland makes hormones that control metabolism, which is the rate at which people burn calories.



Bridge Pose, which is known as Setu Bandha Sarvangasana, is a gentle "inversion" that works with gravity to open the chest and shoulder area. Because the chest is lifted up towards the chin, the thyroid gland is massaged and the toxins can be squeezed out, allowing for fresh oxygen and blood flow to the area.



About 44,670 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with thyroid cancer this year, and about 1,690 will die of the disease, according to the American Cancer Society.
