my duaghter was diagnosed w thyroid cancer last fall, but she has had this mass for over 5 yrs! she has no health insurance and is having very hard time finding help.6 yrs ago when she was preg she developed a lump on her throat, the dr drew blood to check her thyroid function and it was normal, he never did an ultra-sound,just told her that it would prob go away after she has baby, she was 24 at that time. it didnt go away, she had anuther baby 18 months later and the lump had grown, this dr. did the same thing, drew blood for thyroid function and it was normal again, no ultra-sound, told her it was probably just a goiter and not to worry about it. she had anuther baby last october, this lump had grown to the size of a small apple, she was constantly getting sick and had 2 miscariages in the meantime. this current dr. was concerned about the lump, she drew blood and it came back normal but she also did ultra-sond and it showed that she had 9 masses inside.my daughter was sent to a cancer dr. and had a biopsy done, it came back malignant. now......he wanted to do surgery a.s.a.p. but daughter has no health ins. and hospital wanted money up front or no surgery. in the meantime we had cntacted some charity org's and had her scheduled for surgery this month but it has been put off because of this swine flu, they were goin to remove her thyroid, both lymph glands and poss more, depending on teste done after surg and radiation treatment, so when it got put off you can understand my worry. she has been really sick past 2 weeks and finally went into hosp to make sure she didnt have swine flu, thank god she didnt but, dr. had done x-rays and shadows are showing up on her lymph glands now!! they told her she needs to apply for disability and when she gets turned down apply for medicaide.....i am so conecerned, stressed out, worried, that it's going to b too late for her!!! have been crying for past week, please tell me i am worrying for nuthing..

Hi, have you tried the clinical trials look on internet, and also like the hospital in san fransico, it is stanford, also look at the big places like the mayo clinic, and the cancer institue, My friend had a really bad thyroid cancer, problem is it can spread, where do you live. also call the make a wish foundation. i hope this has helped. please write back how old is she. Can she go to a childrens hospital. also, you can maybe take her to a emergency room, with the sythoms let them test her, without saying the word insurance she will be billed. but maybe a doctor out her would help the universatity for cancers i think are the best. look under these things and look for the clinical trials (they are free_). god bless you

When you don't have insurance and limited resources, you can qualify for medicaid. If you make too much money, you can go to a free clinic or, as you found out, charity. There are more resources out there than people realize but we need health care for everyone. It's the middle class, those who work and make too much to qualify for welfare, who are penalized. If she were single, she would qualify for more benefits than a married woman because of the husbands income. A lot of major hospitals got high tech radiation equipment and must treat a certain number of people without resources or insurance. Keep that in mind when searching for treatment. But, to answer your question, I think the pregnancies have stimulated her hormone production, that is, fed the cancer. She will probably be put on medication to starve the cancer and remove estrogen from her body. I have a friend with a similar history who was not expected to live 6 months when they finally got around to treating her and this cancer starving medication (which is free if you are low income) has shrunk the cancer and it has disappeared from her shoulder, back, stomach and pelvis. It is amazing what they can do now with medication. She won't be able to have more children because of the estrogen production but she will be alive. Your daughter has more miracles available to her than at any time in the history of cancer. Good luck!

Do you know what kind of thyroid cancer? We know of several clinical trials she may qualify for. what city are you in? I will see if we can get some advice local to where you are.

the surgery is important so don't give up pursuing ways to pay for it. Please keep us posted on her status.

I hope this will give you support to get you both through this challenging time.

I was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer two years ago and underwent surgery to have a total thyroidectomy my cancer was falicular variant of papillary cancer and the carcinoma was 4cm. I was given radio active iodine to stop the spread of any cancer cells as a precautionary as they checked my lymph nodes and the cancer had not spread. There was not much support for me in New Zealand so i searched the internet and there is a very good support group Thyca in USA and through their support I was able to come to terms with my condition and understand what having had thyroid cancer actually means. Maybe they can help with some charity or tell you where you can get some funds for the operation your daughter so desperately needs.
I was told my cancer due to the size aof the tumor may have been their for 10 years.
I am very positive and was told that it is a very good cancer to get by my endriconoligst as it is a cancer that is confined to the Thryoid area. The most challenging part fo r me was getting my Thyroxine mediation right which took the best part of 18 months to understand how I was feeling . Good luck for you and your daughter .

follicullar. she lives in ft smith ark area, she has applied for diability but since she works a part time job to support her 4 children ( she is single ), they say she does not qualify. this tumor is the size of an apple, she applied for a charity group there and qualified but the hosp was bought out by anuther group ( sparks hosp ) and they dont do charity work, her doctor gave her all of her files and told her to go to Little Rock and check into the emergency, she did that yesterday and they are scheduling her surgery for early nxt week. she also has a tumor in one of her lymph glands on her neck that is growing inward and almost touching her tonsils, she hurts all over and gets sick all the time...

she is a single mother and 30 years old, the cancer has spread to one of her lymph nodes they arent sure yet it if has spread any farther yet , she is waiting for them to notify her for her surgery schedule they told her early nxt week, I am disgusted with our government, she did not qualify for disability because she was working, the doctoer was amazed that she could even work, a mother will go thru a lot to put food on the table for her kids, she has come home crying because she hurts so much all over......I am scared this has gone on for too long and if I lived any closer to the 2 doctors that put her off because she was poor I am afraid I might shoot them both !! that is terrible to say i know but that is hw i feel right now. she has had this going on for 7 years !!!
