Having my thyroid removed in 5 weeks

From: doris182004 - 4 years 2 weeks ago

I'm going to have my thyroid removed in 5 weeks due to cancer. I understand that after the surgery, weight gain is inevitable. I exercise and try to watch what I eat now. Is there anything I should be doing now, as far as the right foods to eat or not and so on, to hopefully not to gain too much weight? I'm nervous about the whole thing and the word cancer is totally freaking me out. I am 54 years old, been almost through menopause, and I take hormone replacement drugs. Will this affect anything with the drugs I will be taking after thyroid surgery?

Hi,
I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer and breast cancer at the same time 4 years ago. They told me I had way more to fear from the breast cancer than thyroid cancer. I have had no reoccurance of either cancer and am doing great. I do not think that weight gain is inevitable. My weight has remained about the same. I am 55 years old now. I take Levothyroxine due to not having a thyroid anymore and have not had any problems with that. Good luck with your surgery and hopefully that will be the end of the matter.

Thanks so much for your response. Going through both breast and thyroid cancerat the same time. I can't even imagine it. You're a strong woman and I applaud you. It's so hard not to worry even though everyone says that there is nothing to worry about. I think I'm just worried about surgery in general. Anyway, good luck to you too and I wish you a long, healthy and happy life.

I too am about to have at least half of my thyroid taken out in 4 weeks. They say I have a 4 cm tumor and the FNA came back suspicios. The other side has 3 smaller tumors. I am concerned that if they don't take it all that I will just have to go through another surgery in years to come. Have you gotten any feedback on your post concerning 1/1 of ALL?

I, too, have been diagnosed with Thyroid cancer and am having sugery in 2 weeks. I am worried about all of it. I had my cervical spine fused 4 years ago so I already had a neck surgery and had a lot of complication with my voice/swallowing after. I used to work out all the time but since 2006 it has been hard with my neck issues and now this. I have heard all the good things about his type of cancer but am worried about the side effects espcially the weight gain and other issues that I keep reading. How did it go you you? What advice do you have? Thank you and hope all is going well.

I had my thyroid removed 3 weeks ago and I'm doing good. The surgery went well and I still have my voice and no pain. I didn't gain any weight and everything really did go well. My surgeon said I have to meet with the oncologist since the nodule was a little larger than expected and might qualify me for radiation. I will let you know about the meeting with the encologist and what to expect. If anyone is wondering about removing the whole or partial thyroid, my opinion would be whole and this is my opinion and nobody elses. The pathology report found microscopic cancerous things on the other lobe of my thryoid, so it's a good thing that my surgeon only removes the entire thyroid and not partial. I want to wish everyone good health for the New Year and for anyone having thyroid surgery, DON'T WORRY.

i had my out 1 1/2 year ago. i would do anything to have my cancer thyroid back. my life has been hell. i cannot find a dr worth having. i am looking for my 3rd one. the one that i should be seeing, was last dec 2010 and she called me in Jan and told me my cancer has not come back and i did not need to see her. so i get all my blood work done by my PA at work. I had 2 lobes 2inches and the other one was 1 1/2 inches and 10 lymph nobes and thyroid taken out becasue of cancer. I would love to have them back.
