Hyperthyroidism & speech disorders

From: lisamill - 5 years 2 weeks ago

I was diagnosed w/hyperthyroidism, including serveral nodes on each side of the thyroid. Symptoms began w/slurring of words, hoarness, dry throat, trouble swallowing and choking and breathlessness when talking. Over a period of 10 months, the slurring, hoarness, and breathlessness have gotten worse. Have had and MRI, Choking test, Ears, Nosse & Throat exam. all showing nothing wrong.
Has anyone suffered these same symptoms, & if so, what was the solution (if any)?

Your symptoms sound similiar to mine. I am currently still in the process of being tested and have not received any diagnosis beyond the fact that I do have a nodule in my left thyroid lobe. As I think back I went to the doctor a year ago with dizziness and pressure in my ears and was told that I had fluid build up and to take Mucinex daily to relieve these symptoms. I think it was starting then because it eventually progressed to speech problems, trouble swallowing and being breathless when I speak. Also sometimes I have incredible pressure in my ears. I will try to get back to you when I finally reach a point in all this where they give me a treatment plan. I just had my uptake scan on Monday and Tuesday and I have not received the results yet. Still searching .

Hi. I assume that you have had an ultrasound and FNA. Good luck. It is hard to figure it all out.

I have had the ultrasound and thyroid uptake scan. Had a big dicussiion with my doc. She is sending me to a specialist because I think she doesnt know what to do either. Every test comes out within the "normal" range. Except the ultrasound. She does not do the FNA so I am hoping to have that when I see the specialist. Even if just to ease my mind that its benign. It still bothers me however. My voice is geting worse, choking is much worse and I get very tired. She finally put me on a small dosage of Synthroid so we will see if that helps at all.

Have yu received the results of the uptake scan and ultra scan? I have been going through this for at least 10 months, and am really tired of it all. Quality of life is vey narrow. Doc. did blood workup again two weeks ago, however, he is our on vacation. Am waiting for him to return to see what our next step is. I will get back with you when I find out.

Hi Lisa, I finally went to the endocrine surgeon yesterday. All this waiting is driving me nuts. You must be out of patience by now. Dr did a FNA and ultrasound yesterday. I will have to wait 1-2 weeks for results of the FNA. I do have more than one nodule he told me yesterday. Just most are tiny. He thought he could see that my parathyroids also, at least 2, were enlarged. He ordered a full battery of tests, he told me he felt I most probably have hasimotos thyroiditis. He said all these symptoms we have are caused by the autoimmune response and sometimes it (the thyroid) is inflammed and sometimes is it quiet. That is why symptoms are worse sometimes more than others. He said the medical community still does not know what triggers a inflammatory response yet. More info to come Im sure, keep in touch. I hope you are seeing a specialist, not just a GP, you owe it to yourself to get a referral if you have not already. Find someone GOOD! Heidi

Hi hilo. I have been going to a gp, however, he acts like he doesn't know what is going on. I have mentioned going to a specelist but he ignores me. I am fed up, so I am now looking for a good endocriniologist. I live in St. Louis, so if you or your doctor know of anyone here, let me know. I am ready to get some posivtive input from, a doctor. Just testing would make me feel like something is bing done, not just ignored.

Hi Lisa, I just found out yesterday that I have papillary thyroid cancer. I am going in the hospital on Sept 16th for a complete thyroidectomy. He said possibly my parathyroids are involved too and he most likely will take out my lymph glands at the top and bottom of my thyroid. It is interesting to note however that all of my tests that I had, except the biopsy, came back"normal". Keep searching until you find answers that are satisfactory to you. I knew something wasnt right and we kept after my doctor (GP) until she sent me to a surgeon and he found the cancer. Good luck to you, Heidi

Thank goodness, you finally found some answers and can see a light at the end of the tunnel.. Knowing something is wrong and not being able to convince the Dr.s is so frustrating. Keep communicating. Maybe others will see this discussing and be enlightened. I know I have been. Before I found this web sight, I was getting pretty depressed. Thaks for all your input.

Hi Lisa, I thinkyou must have misunderstood, I don't have surgery until September 16th. I seem to have experienced some relief from some of my symptoms however, I think that is due to the synthyroid I started a month ago. I will keep you posted on my results of my surgery. I have found a good source of comraderie is FaceBook. There are some good thyroid groups on that website. Maybe you can find someone in your area who knows a good endo. Good luck Heidi

Hi brendarayford:

Did you ever get treatment for your hyperthyroidism and did your symptoms resolve?

My father has slurred speach, horse voice, lack of energy and I think it is the thyroid drug that is causing the problems. He has also lost 75 pounds and they increased his dose.

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks
