Stomach Bloating and Thyroid Disfuction
For about three years I have constantly grown tired and now besides being tired all the time, my hands are wrinkled, my fingernails have verticle ridges in them sort of like couderoury, and I have severe stomach bloating, and seem to be cold most of the time. It does not matter what I eat or drink or how much I eat or drink, it seems like after I swallow, it stops and hangs up in my sternum area and then pressures my diaphram and causes me to struggle to breathe, and my stomach is bloated 24/7 and I am at my wits end. I do not smoke or use alcohol in any form, and have checked my other meds for reactions, I have followed the diet for bloating prevention, I have given up drinking coffee and mile and soda, and nothing stops me from bloating up everytime I eat or drink anything. At night when I go to bed and lay on my right side I do not feel the bloating and have no trouble with normal breathing. I keep discussing this with my MD and he keeps sending me for the upper and lower GI and CT scans which has found nothing. After researching this problem on my own I am getting a strong hint that this could be a malfunctioning thyroid gland, and I need the experience of others who have gone thru this problem and have found the solution. The bloating is a miserable way to have to live day after day. I need your help.

I have only recently been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, but I have experienced all that too for a long time. My advice to you and everyone is if you don't agree with your doctor go to another one until you find one who trusts that you know when something is wrong with your body and they will test for other conditions until they find out what is causing your problems. My grandfather went in for eye surgery but could barely breath when he laid down. So they tested his heart and lungs, but they were fine. They sent him home without finding out what caused his problem and he didn't force the issue. He believed that doctors knew what they were doing and you shouldn't question them. He died a year later when the cancer in his esophagus spread to his liver. The diagnosis was confirmed after he died. Sorry for the scary story, but it was to emphasize how important it is to keep trying until you get a diagnosis. Good luck, I hope your diagnosis has an easy cure!
Your symptoms are just a few of what I experienced for many years. Have you researched the possibility of it being parathyroid related? Please go Dr. James Norman's website and read what he has to say. I can tell you, though, that you will not find any reference to your nail growth pattern and I also don't think your sternum pain is addressed. I am seeing resolution to some of these symptoms just a short time after my parathyroidectomy.
I would very much appreciate hearing back from you!
I too have recently been diagnosed with hypothyroid BUT a bit different than you. I was fine felt normal for 69 active except don't walk well feet seem to have a bit of arthritis other than that not much complaint. Doctor called after yearly blood work said pick up RX I called into pharmacy your thyroids out of whack. So I did but FIRST did some research, apparently not enough, I started taking levothyroxine and GOT THE ABDOMINAL BLOAT IF THAT'S WHAT YOU CALL IT,
