Hypothyroidisn and/or Hyperparathyroidism?
I am 57 years old. In 1988 while living in Mississippi, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and I was prescribed Levothyroxine 0.05 mg. I returned to Chicago in late 1988 and a doctor told me that I shouldn't be on thyroid meds and I was taken off. I remained off for a year and then another doctor said I needed thyroid meds and prescribed Levothyroxine 0.05 mg again.
Every doctor that I saw said the dosage was fine but in September 1989, I had a slight heart attack and couple of years later I had another. Right after that heart attack, I had a stroke. I then found out that I needed parathyroid surgery. The surgery revealed that my parathyroid gland was wrapped around my neck. I was not prescribed any medication after the surgery. I was told to continue with the 0.05 mg Levothyroxine 0.05 mg. which one doctor eventually changed to Synthroid 0.05 mg. I had read that it was best to stay on the original brand prescribed but the doctor told me that it was not true. I begin to suffer from malignant hypertension with bp sometimes as high as 240/157 and then arthritis and now asthma and sleep apnea. I have gone from 110 lbs. to 200 lbs during all of this. I am exhausted when I wake up; I go weeks unable to sleep. I cannot tolerate heat. My hair won't grow. I do not have underarm hair. My finger nails won't grow. None of these ailments run in my family. I also suffer from pancreatitis with episodes once every 3-5 years and I am not or ever have been a drinker. I also suffer from chronic constipation
I don't know if I have hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. I just want to know what is going on. I need help with this.

My suggestion to you would be to have your doctor check your vitamin D and your calcium levels and maybe even a bone density scan. Since having one of my parathyroids taken out, I have had to go on Vitamin D and also take a calcium supplement. If your parathyroid issue went undected for long, you may also have some level of osteoporosis. Good luck!
